C6 CORVETTE FUEL PUMP RELAY ISSUE
Video Transcript [Music] Hello everybody welcome to Lyles Friday podcast it's beautiful day here in Florida at C&S Corvettes I had something come in this week that I wanted to share with you all this is an important tech tip for C6 Corvettes specifically C6 Corvettes that are having a problem with their fuel pump relay a fuel pump relay little square that's plugged into the fuse box under the hood on the right hand side of your car okay so customer complains that they're driving their car to things fine they stopped to get gas they fill up they get back in their car they go to start it everything goes dead it's just ready to get a kitty giggity no start no fuel pressure well so first thing you think of is well fuel system right so the car gets towed into gear and Ray goes through checks everything cars perfect fuel pressure has spark no codes everything's great car starts runs just fine well know what's going on so for an entire day we moved that car around the parking lot stopped and started stopped and started trying to get it to fail finally after about three hours of work we got that car to fail instantly Rado VIN with his power probe and his scope and figured out that the fuel pump relay was burned out fantastic it's like an eight dollar park they're readily available at any parts store takes the fuel relay out puts a new one in test the system drive the car everything's great call the customer customer pays customer goes home you would think that would be the end of the story wouldn't but it's not because there is a prevalent problem with the fuel pump relay pin in the wire harness plug now to illustrate what I'm talking about I've got a picture behind me here this is not a series of buildings downtown New York these are the giant plugs that are under your fuse box where all your fuses and all your relays are plugged in at the top this is what they're plugging down into and if you look very carefully right here you will see that there is one that is brown and earned that my friends just happens to be the contact pin for the fuel pump relay that pin is a curved piece of metal like this in an opening and when the pin goes in it slides down and makes contact like so over time that curve can get flattened out so now your contact is like this and when it gets hot it's got good contact when it starts to cool off it shrinks away just enough to lose contact there by burning the surrounding area and thereby killing the car so this customer called me stranded at a gas station an hour away extremely upset and I totally understand why but how would we have known until we dug further into it so we paid to have the car towed back here dug into it that deep found the problem reposition the pin double-checked everything the car has been tested for two days straight no failures no nothing it's hard to believe that a car this is a 2008 Corvette we are not talking in 1970s something or other this is a very modern car just that one little pin being slightly bent out of shape caused all these problems so if your car is having that symptom don't let the dealer tell you you need brand new fuel pumps for $3,000 you need this you need that you may need that stuff but always make sure that they are checking this big plug under the fuse box under the hood because if that pin right next to this big bolt hole is burned you know that's your problem that's your helper tip for today if you have questions or comments feel free to reach out to me at 800-886-5064 or get me up Lyle@CorvettePartsCenter.com I've got another video coming for you next week also focusing on a common c6 problem I look forward to sharing you sharing that with you then have a good day.
